Treatment for Depression

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (or TMS) is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation. A specialized cap is placed over the patients head that sends out magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain. The nerve cells that are connected to mood and depression are stimulated, effecting the brain’s neurotransmitter levels. TMS therapy is an intensive approach which has shown to stimulate regions of the brain that have decreased activity. The treatment requires several sessions over a designated amount of time, with symptom relief appearing early on.

Our mission is to provide quality health services to the individuals in our communities. We make primary care accessible to our clients as well as providing support for individuals struggling with substance abuse and cooccurring symptoms. Clients will also have access to clinical specialists who can effectively manage their chronic pain. All services are established on the needs of the client, determined by an individualized Person-Centered Plan. With dedicated collaborative care, we bring focus to all aspects of your health

How does it work and what should I expect?

Patients can utilize TMS as a treatment by itself or in conjunction with their medication and talk therapy. Each person is different, and the nature of their severe depression can vary. What to expect

Each patient who is suffering from severe and debilitating depression will have the opportunity to have a consult with our therapy team at Gemini Health to determine if TMS is the right option for you. You and our therapist will establish an individualized treatment plan for your specific depression needs. We help determine which magnet strength is most appropriate to better treat your depression and symptoms. The appropriate nerves cells are targeted, initiating the depression relief. Many patients experience a mild tapping on their scalp from the magnetic impulses, but the sensation is not a painful one.

If you think this may be the right option for you, or if you have any questions, please give Gemini Health a call (301) 363-1063 to schedule a consult for TMS.

Is TMS FDA Approved?

Yes! TMS is currently FDA approved to treat major depression.

Is TMS the same thing as Electroconvulsive Therapy

No. Electroconvulsive therapy is done under general anesthesia while TMS does not require any anesthesia at all. TMS provides mild stimulation while ECT has electric currents pass through the brain to intentionally trigger a brief seizure.

What are the side-effects of tMS?

Like any other treatment, TMS does have a few side-effects. The most common is a mild headache that can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication. Patients who are predisposed for seizures or epilepsy may be more at risk to experience these episodes.

What do i do during a TMS session?

While sitting during your session, you can read, listen to music, or watch tv.

Depression is one of the most diagnosed conditions, affecting millions globally. It is common for many to experience some form of depression or a depressive episode once, or a few times in their lives. But if they are experiencing chronic, and long-lasting depression symptoms, they may be suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). According to the World Health Organization, depression is the leading cause of disability across the world. Many people diagnosed with depression and/or MDD approach treating their illness with talk therapy and medication. They schedule regular sessions with their therapists and take a daily regimen of medication (like anti-depressants) to manage their symptoms.

These standard approaches usually work for mild and moderate depression. But for those who experience more severe symptoms, their depression may become resistant to traditional treatments. Therapy does not seem to help, and their medications are no longer effective. For many, the newer treatment method of TMS becomes the only option that seems to help.

By providing these collaborative services in a single location, we provide ease of access for medical care to our community. If you think this may be the right option for you, or if you have any questions, please give Gemini Health a call (301) 363-1063 to schedule a consult for TMS.
